Having passion and drive is one of the greatest qualities needed for paralegal jobs. It is important for paralegals to be interested in not only the work they do but in the work of their colleagues and the state of their industry. Joining a paralegal associating will make you an active member of the paralegal community both locally and nationally and finding one to join may be easier than you think.
In 2006, California passed a law that strictly defined paralegal jobs and qualifications. This was a groundbreaking event for the paralegal profession since legislation had been brought up several other times in the past but had been ultimately dismissed. In the over 30-year existence of paralegal jobs in the state of California, there had never been a law to properly define what it means to be a paralegal.
Because there are so many jobs in a law office, it is easy to blur the lines between paralegal jobs and other roles that work to aid lawyers. One of these roles is that of a legal secretary. Legal secretaries have vary similar duties to paralegals and legal assistants. They may even be referred to as legal assistants while their rate of pay and education suggest otherwise. However, they are just as valuable to overworked lawyers.
Like all other positions, paralegal jobs don’t just pop up out of thin air the second you finish your education. A job search takes time, dedication and a knowledge of your resources. If you have all of these qualities, you should be able to land the job you always wanted.
A vital part of paralegal jobs is clearly stated in the NFPA’s Model Code of Ethics and Professional Responsibility: “A paralegal shall avoid conflicts of interest and shall disclose any possible conflict to the employer or client, as well as to the prospective employers or clients.” Paralegals must always be mindful of these conflicts to avoid the appearance of bias and preserve impartiality in a case. This is also true for judicial assistants as it is even more important for judges to remain impartial during the course of a trial.
One of the most important roles in paralegal jobs is client billing and record-keeping. Paralegals require an extraordinary amount of organization and attention to detail that will help them to conduct extensive research as well as properly prepare billing statements and log payments. Your paralegal certificate will qualify you as a billing professional and a job as a billing clerk will not be hard to find with your experience and education.
Just as standard paralegal jobs will require you to be the right hand of an attorney, a job as a judicial assistant will have you aiding a judge at the state or federal level.
